Magnes is a technology spin-off from Multi Scale Robotics Lab of ETH Zürich. Magnes has strong expertise on design, simulation, and fabrication of magnetic materials and magnetic-based sensors. Magnes has developed a magnetic multi-axis force sensing technology. The patented force sensor technology can be utilised in sports and health monitoring applications as well as in industrial applications. The Magnes sensors enable measurement of normal and shear forces with an easy implementation, especially attractive for wearable devices.

As a first product, Magnes has developed a wearable cycling powermeter. The ultimate measure of a cyclist’s performance is the power he/she outputs.
There is growing interest in the global cycling community to quantify performance and train in a scientific way. Magnes offers the only wearable powermeter, which replaces the common cycling cleat. The device can be mounted onto your cycling shoes and requires no modification of the bike. It measures how you push the pedal, how your force is distributed on the cleat giving insight into your technique, your pedalling efficiency, and your fit to your bike. You can analyze all metrics, such as watts and pressure on each pedal, see the data on your phone, and even upload it to 3rd party apps.
In parallel to its powermeter product, Magnes is planning to launch a new analytics platform for cyclists. Having its roots in Multi-Scale Robotics, Magnes has extensive know-how on advanced data processing and machine learning techniques. This know-how will be utilised to process cyclists’ data and provide an AI-based coaching platform. Users can export their existing data from standard platforms (such as Strava and Garmin Connect). This data will be processed to give truly personalised feedback to the cyclists. The platform will have utilities for interaction between users, find challenges to motivate cyclists, and advanced comparison options for cyclists to compare themselves with fellow cyclists.
